TRUE VISION TRIP

17 July 2019

In a somewhat plain-looking building on the side of Rama VI Road lies the TrueVisions headquarters, one of Thailand’s largest cable and satellite operators. TrueVision is a part of True Corporation, widely known to be one of the largest communications conglomerates in Thailand. True Corporation is divided into multiple subsidiaries such as Truemove H, TrueOnline, and TrueVisions. Let’s take a look at how TrueVisions functions.

First, there’s the dubbing floor on the 8th floor of the building. Voice actors are seated in a room together, dubbing tv shows. There are two methods by which TV shows are dubbed. The audio is either dubbed straight onto the images by the voice actors or the voices are recorded first and then spliced together with the visuals. In the latter case, TrueVisions record the voices and then send the audio abroad where it is then spliced together with the visuals.

Next, on the 5th floor is the base of operations for TNN. On this floor are multiple server rooms as well as the recording studios and editing station. There are two studios all in all. During our visit, we got the chance to see one of the live news shows. There is a control room that controls the video and audio to display on the show with the visuals being selected and changed in realtime according to a script. Additionally, there is an external drive storage library where, as its name suggests, data is stored onto external drives instead of the server. The data stored include shows from previous years.

Finally, we visited the network monitoring room also known as the fish tank because the personnel all work behind glass windows much like how a fish tank would appear. This room is where all of the channels are monitored for any failure in connection and the like. Engineers monitor every show and fix signal transmission problems as they appear. As this is an extremely important job, engineers take shifts to cover all 24 hours of the day. There are also two different broadcasting methods employed. There’s the turnaround method in which the station receives the show from another country and displays the show as they receive it. There’s also local production where TrueVisions create their own shows in-house and also broadcast the show on their own.
