BETAGRO TRIP

7 June 2019

On June 7th 2019, the ICS Business Club had the privilege of visiting a food product supplier company called Betagro. The Betagro factory is located in Lopburi, about a 2 hour drive from Samut Prakan, Bangkok. During this trip, the club had the honor of listening to the Mrs. Siriwan Intarakumthornchai, the executive vice president of finance, accounting, and information technology.

Betagro is a food product supplier company that was founded in 1967. The focus of Betagro is on intensive quality and food safety. Betagro is widespread amongst 36 companies, containing 34,000 employees and their sales earn around 90,000,000 baht. The purpose of Betagro is to help people and their communities achieve better quality of life through better quality, more safe, and fair priced foods. Their belief that people must have a choice and access to better quality and fair priced foods is an important factor in their high sales revenue.

So far, you’ve read a bit about the history and core values of Betagro, but to truly understand Betagro, you have to understand the business aspect of it. Betagro contains 3 business sectors; agro business, livestock business, and food business. Since Betagro controls all aspects of production, from the feeding of the animal to the distribution to the consumer, it needs certain sectors to manage specific aspects of the process. Food business is the sector that is most prominent as it controls fresh meat, processed meat, and the distribution of food.

Betagro’s food is found in 3 different brands; S-pure, Betagro, and Itoham. S-pure’s production is 100% natural, meaning it avoids the use of antibiotics. S-pure insures that the chance of diseases entering the animals from humans is very small, as no person visiting can enter the farms where the animals are kept. S-pure has received several awards from the NSF, including the S-pure chicken “raised without antibiotics” award. S-pure also produces eggs that are kept in cold climates to ensure the egg being fresh and healthy. The level of health at which S-pure aims to maintain is truly impressive. Itoham is another one of the brands found, but is mainly found in Japan. Itoham produces meats such as sausage, pork, and ham and distributes them in Japan.

One of the most intriguing parts that the ICS Business Club was able to hear about was the poultry production process. This process is essentially lays out the stages in which the chickens are delivered to the farm, cut-up, and cooled after death. One of the more interesting facts that was given by Mrs. Siriwan was that the chickens are left in the craters that they are delivered in for 30 minutes. This is done to let the chickens get acclimated. They then go through several painful processes, including getting electrically shocked to make them unconscious. Eventually they are killed and cut-up into 5 pieces; leg, wing, fillet, bone, breast.

Betagro’s success can be attributed to consistent desires to ensure consumer safety and enjoyment. Their slogan, “excellence of our people and partnership” ties into their high consumer satisfaction and blossoming business relationships.
