Colleges & Majors

Generally speaking, majors have little to no impact when it comes to success in business. While most may feel that enrolling in a business major gives an edge in starting and managing a business, the important indicators of success are diligence, persistence, grit, and innovativeness. It’s passion that indicates success, not the major. What really matters is that you demonstrate passion and excel at whatever you major in. Of course, college names do matter when it comes to finding opportunities to work but what matters even more is the alumni because they connect you to business opportunities.

Career Path & Switching Jobs

In career paths, a principle to adhere to is that “passion chooses you”, not the other way around. Do what you are passionate about, not just what you think will be most beneficial to you because working without passion won’t bring success. Take time considering what you want to learn and do. Consider if a job is a one-way door or a two-way door. A one-way door is referring to any job that requires highly specific skills that don’t transfer well to other jobs. A two-way door refers to a job which requires skills that are transferable to other jobs, giving you more options when it comes to switching careers.

Small vs Large Companies

The work environments in a small company and a large company are vastly different. A small company requires you to work on a variety of tasks using many skills whereas a large company requires you to use a specific skill on a specific task. The reason for this difference in work style is very simple: small companies have limited personnel requiring an employee to work on many tasks while large companies do not have that same limitation and are able to divide up their workforce so each employee works on their own specific task.

IT

The IT department is an indispensable part of a business, dealing with data and interaction with a user. IT functions can be divided into two main parts: the frontend and the backend. The frontend deals with the user interface which interacts directly with the user. It has to be able to control information flow between the user and the database. The backend deals with security, traffic flow, and servers. In more recent times, the concept of cloud storage has become increasingly popular and important. Some companies have even hired cloud storage services to take care of their data.
