ASIA CHEMICAL COMPANY LIMITED TRIP

1 March 2019

On March 1, 2019, the ICS Business Club travelled to an industrial estate in Bang Samak, Bang Pakong to visit Asian Chemical Co., Ltd (A.C.C.), so here we'll be sharing the things we learned from Mrs. Malika Srirungrojana, the Assistant Managing Director of A.C.C. and guide of our tour.

A.C.C. is a chemical company that started as a waste recycling company which extracted metals like zinc, copper, and tin from waste. Currently, however, they have branched out to also produce copper products, water treatment chemicals, electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs), all of which directly stem from chemistry.

Now, are you ready for some history? 44 years ago in 1975 during China's Cultural Revolution, there lived a chemical professor in Beijing, who, like others, would be caught and made to work as a farmer if he were to remain in China. In response, he moved from China to Thailand. At that time, Thailand was growing faster than ever, and what grew along with the population was the amount of waste. So, this chemical professor, along with Mrs. Malika's father-in-law, founded A.C.C. in hopes of providing ways to deal with and make good use of those waste.

As touched on above, A.C.C. has also branched out to sell other products and services. A.C.C. now produces copper compounds that are mixed into animal feeds, agricultural chemicals, plating chemicals, and catalysts involved in mining. Specifically, copper sulfate makes up to around 50% of an animal's feed, with vitamins, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates making up the other 50%. They also produce printed circuit boards and water waste management products, like ferric chloride, which they export to countries like Australia to help clean their potable water. Recently, they've also been providing logistics services, which involve the transportation of goods

A.C.C. can now be defined as a small medium enterprise (SME), which is any business with less than 200 employees and an income of less than 1,000,000,000 baht. Wondering what A.C.C.’s management organization looks like? Up at the top is the managing director (MD), who has two assistant managing directors. One assistant MD manages employees in charge quality assurance, research and development, engineering, and production, while the other assistant MD (Mrs. Malika) manages employees in charge of public relations & IT, human resources, purchases, logistics, accounting and finance, and sales and marketing.

Being in an industrial estate, A.C.C. is technically under the government's control and supervision as they must regularly report about their waste and production, but at the same time, they are provided by the government with water, electricity, and waste management systems, which greatly facilitate their system.

Fun Facts!

  • A lot of the raw metal materials are from waste solutions

  • A.C.C.’s customers include CP, Betagro, and Cargill - just to name a few

  • A.C.C.’s main markets are in Vietnam, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia

  • 50% of the Korean and Japanese livestocks eat A.C.C.’s products
